Review: Witch Creek Road

Full disclosure, Witch Creek Road blew me away!

I came across Witch Creek Road while browsing Kickstarter for some Canadian content .  It had professional looking cover art and a low entry price, so I backed it and forgot about it.  One month later I received an email from the campaign letting me know the project was done and waiting for download; I read it once, twice, a third time… can’t stop thinking about it.  I stalked Garth Matthams and Kenan Halilovic on social media to learn more about their process and the project’s plans, I can’t get enough, this comic rules!

Art

Garth’s story flows beautifully, with the perfect blend of world building, mystery, and drama.  Kenan’s art delivers a story that draws you in and punches you in the guts when you get too close.  Sabrina’s colouring provides a tone of lurking darkness and suburbia nihilism contrasted by youthful optimism and energy.  Execution of Witch Creek Road is perfect!

Story

As if a high quality product wasn’t enough, this team took the comic a level higher and actually made a thoughtful, original story.  Themes of societal expectations pushing us toward a meaningless purgatory, complimented by the consequence of stepping outside of the circle we are told to stand in.  We hate conforming, but fear the social death of not fitting in.  All of this is accomplished while keeping the reader engaged and entertained.

Reaction

The worst part of Witch Creek Road is the second issue is not released!  I rate it one severed limb.  Just read this comic, you can thank me later.
